VR simulation training experience

Global mining giant Anglo American asked for help to optimise their Health and Safety and Learning and Development within their plant facilities, a crucial challenge not only in terms of optimisation, but also as the ultimate safety of plant workers highly depends on the quality of their training.

The efficiency of VR is proven as a trainling tool as it can provide users a first-hand experience of potentially dangerous scenarios without exposing them to physical risk, a huge asset for information retention. After we conducted an in depth user and desk research, working on-site with the Brazilian Anglo American L&D team, I led the production of a virtual refinery environment, in Unity and accessible via Quest 2, that simulates the workplace and helps employees spot hazards and address them before becoming dangerous.

The experience is composed of a series of 360 degrees scenes, where users are challenged to identify potential behavioural or physical risks. Depending on their response, an incident may or may not be triggered. Each chapter closes with a conclusion, reinforcing the user's learning experience.
Anglo American has since streamlined their use of VR training across their plants.

I managed the project from start to finish, starting with an in-depht discovery phase, collaborating with the client and multiple stakeholders - Based in the UK and Brasil - to establish the current learning challenges and user requirements. we then went through the development of the 'game' design document, finalising the scenario for each chapter of the experience, establishing the look&feel, and kicking off 3D modelling and scene development prototyping through a vertical slice, ahead of full production, launch, analytics setup and roadmap planning.
